Studying coffee like a science and having an insatiable desire for more about coffee – such is the life of Jacky Lai, a bean baking champion. Born in Yilan in 1980, Lai had sharp senses of taste and smell as a child, as if he was destined for the coffee profession. The calling to become a coffee professional came when he worked part-time in a coffee shop for the first time in college. From then on, he kept studying and trying, becoming not only a master of bean baking, but also a coffee expert per se.
After 13 years of self-challenge and struggles, he finally won the championship in bean baking in "2014 World Coffee Event (WCE)" held in Italy, becoming the first Taiwanese to win such an honor!
Romantic and practical, Lai is fascinated with coffee but also knows that it is a long road. For him, coffee is not just about taste, it is life.
The destined encounter between Lai and coffee has created an extraordinary attitude towards life. "People can be imperfect, but they must be special." Some call him crazy because he is so incredibly committed; others ridicule him, calling him a fool because he never lets go; still others call him aggressive, although he merely treats coffee as his life and pursues his dream. After winning the award, Lai remained the same person he had been, insisting on having a cup with his customers no matter how busy he was. Only through interaction with customers can he truly grasp the needs of consumers and provide the best coffee to the guests. Therefore, almost everyone has the opportunity to spot the champion in his café.
A cup of coffee may be someone's destiny, warmth, or love.
